Retaking the forgotten

In architecture, there are many projects that only “live” in paper, in the virtual world, blogs get stuck in time.

This is the case of Trough Architects eyes, a project that began several years ago with some good friends and that know seems like a time capsule, with projects and post written from the past.

I really think this blog was a good idea, it made me stay in touch with architecture and stuff from all over the world, always wanting to do more research, read new books, watch new movies, be impressed by new ideas, etc… Not that I haven´t done this the past years, but my life was too chaotic to write or even think of this blog.

Don´t get me wrong, getting a B.Arch is a great, but it´s also very time consuming, till the point where you cease to exist in an earthly plane and suddenly become some type of architectural zombie, and all you do is your terminal project, work and eat. (Sleeping is out of the question.)

Once you finish college, you take a few seconds turn around and breathe as if the storm had passed …

How naive was I, being an architecture student is only calm before the storm. Working as an architect is more time consuming, with a much tighter schedules and less free time, a small price to pay for all of us who live in this world called Architecture. A world that in fact is very demanding but also very satisfying in return.

With that in mind I promise (not that anyone cares) to retake this forgotten blog and the urge to write the things I see and feel from this mysterious and amusing world, and try to update it a few time a month.

Meanwhile we’ll see what happens.

A propósito de nada, y gracias a la invitación de @a001arq, nos fuimos de concurso la semana pasada.

De principio a fin fue toda una experiencia. Fue algo así:

Días -1 y 0
Tuvimos una junta para conocer al equipo y vernos las caras por primera vez (que en realidad no fue primera vez por que a algunos ya los conocía) y, claro, como es mi malísima costumbre de “primeras impresiones”, llegué más o menos una hora tarde.
Quitando que había unos hombrecitos con cámaras que irrumpían gravemente mi espacio vital (cosa que no me esperaba), la junta fue un éxito y el equipo completo de A-001 me pareció una gran idea.
El equipo estaría compuesto por Eduardo (el arquitecto chief del equipo), Arturo (que es como un baby-Eduardo y que, por motivos que desconocemos, le dicen Chivo), Bernardo ( Bernie para los cuates y freak de la plástica en cualquier presentación ), María José ( estudió letras pero creemos que tiene super poderes y nos ayudaría vía skype desde god-knows-where), Ismael (arquitecto francés que experimentaría con origami) y yo ( bueno…you know me).

Unos días después (véase mi entrada anterior) tuvimos otra junta para la cual tuve que leer mucho y en poco tiempo por que, por supuesto, procastinar es lo que hago mejor. La junta fue un éxito y ya no había más que hacer que esperar el día que tuviéramos que ir al concurso aquel.

Día 1
Y asi llegó por fin el día en el que nos teníamos que presentar (algo así como a las 9am).
Todo ahí estaba bien, teníamos camerino (el cual por supuesto jamás pisamos), comida, gafetes y café ilimitado. Ya con el equipo completo subimos al escenario a instalar computadoras y conocer las “cajas de cristal” en las que trabajaríamos los siguientes días.
Como no sabíamos nada del proyecto todos nos dedicábamos a instagramear y tomar café, al fin, no había mas que hacer. El equipo y las computadoras estaban listos y no quedaba más que esperar.
Un par de horas y mucho, mucho café después pudimos por fin subir al escenario a que nos presentaran, dando una vuelta para que nos ubicaran como caballos en el hipódromo, y enterarnos de que iba el proyecto que teníamos que desarollar. Resulta que era algo como un módulo de seguridad móvil.
Nos metimos a nuestra caja, repartimos el trabajo y empezamos a trabajar mientras mucha gente con y sin cámaras nos observaba como si eso fuera un zoológico y una camarita pequeñita nos tomaba fotos algo así como cada 10 seg.

De alguna manera sobrevivimos todo el día, el trabajo quedó completo y el recinto sin una gota de café. Era algo como la 1am y esos últimos cafés (y con café quise decir chelas…no, no es cierto, como creen? Jamás nos darían chela…eran Modelo especial) me dejaron exhausta. Por supuesto tardé un par de horas en dormirme por mi acelere cerebral y algo que, según yo, era una gripa pequeñita que se quitaría con un antigripal.

Día 2
Al dia siguiente desperté como zombie, con fiebre y sin ganas ni de café ni de vivir. Aún así logré salir de mi cama (contra la indicación de todo el mundo) e ir a la presentación.
Unas horas más tarde, con un jugo de naranja en la mano y después de una cerradísima votación, nosotros pasábamos a la siguiente ronda. (yay!)

Resultó que no me estaba convirtiendo en zombie, sólo tenia la peor infección en la garganta de la historia que me ganó muchas inyecciones por que “doctor, no me importa que me tenga que hacer, me tengo que curar en algo asi como 16 horas”. Sépanlo, eso nunca funciona.

Día 3
Lo que tocaba ese día era la misma dinámica del día 1. La diferencia: Ese día había pan francés de desayunar e íbamos contra un equipo súper padre, se sentía la buanondez, además, ese día teníamos un plan de acción mucho más claro que el primer día y el ambiente estuvo mucho más relajado. ¿Cámaras? ¿Público? Ni idea, resulta que el cerebro humano (y unos buenos audífonos) aíslan de maravilla todo aquello que no resulte relevante.
La enfermedad iba mucho mejor, vamos, aunque tenía el trasero adolorido por las inyecciones, por lo menos no tenía fiebre y ya tenia muchas drogas (legales). El problema de ese tipo de drogas es que duermen, la ventaja, había siempre alguien por ahí cerca que nos ofrecía café.
Pasaba el tiempo y sabíamos que se acercaba la hora de entregar.
Quedando sólo 3 horas para la entrega final empezamos a ver como, en el pedazo de escenario que quedaba enfrente de nuestras cajas de cristal, ponían instrumentos musicales. Normalmente la idea de un concierto esta padrísima…no tanto así la idea de trabajar contra reloj con un concierto encima, aunque, extrañamente, resultó ser muy divertido y decían que, del otro lado de las cajas, se veía padre (y claro, es que, a nosotros los arquitectos, además de enseñarnos a ser creativos y a toda madre en la escuela, no enseñan también a ser escenografía).
Pues muy artsy la cosa con el concierto y todo.(véase la sig entrada)

Justo a tiempo y ya ciego el equipo entero (saben, las luces “de concierto” no son óptimas para trabajar), terminamos el proyecto.
El equipo muy contento, yo con mi tos de perro y todos con chela en mano, brindamos y nos deseamos suerte para el día siguiente.

Dia 4
Como en cualquier entrega final (y gracias a mi suerte y habilidad extrema para hacer estupideces en los momentos menos convenientes) algo le pasó (le hice) a la presentación y hubo que arreglarla en chinga de último momento.
Ese día tuvimos que presentarnos un poco más tarde, ésta vez a un auditorio considerablemente más lleno y con menos café en nuestros organismos por que ese día hacia mucho calor (creo que no es cierto que lo caliente quita el calor).

Repetimos la dinámica de los caballos del hipódromo y empezaron las exposiciones.
Primero nosotros y después el otro equipo.
Al final de la votación del jurado, el otro equipo pasaba a la final. Nosotros, por nuestra parte, obteníamos nuestro reconocimiento y concluíamos así nuestra participación en Glassbox…en realidad acabamos unas horas después por que nos tuvimos que quedar a un par de conferencias (muy buenas) y la gran final, en la que el equipo que nos ganó el pase a la final quedaba como primer lugar en el torneo.

Si bien es que al final no quedamos en primer lugar, creo que a ninguno nos importó mucho y el trabajo valió totalmente la pena.
Tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con un gran equipo de gente padrísima y súper talentosa (‏@Arturoolav19 @egorozpe @BernnieC @Miss_de_Tal ), conocí a mucha gente padre y aprendí un montón de cosas.
Fue, sin miedo a equivocarme, una de las cosas mas surreales y divertidas que me ha dado mi carrera y sé que, sin dudarlo ni un segundo, volvería a hacerlo un millón de veces.

“The perfect world”, whether it consists of industrial modernism or 1960s nomadic settlements, typically effaces differences within. The speculations that become concrete easily become demanding as well, expecting the world to somehow shed its flaws and become a glossy fiction itself.

Scenarios, speculations, ideals and utopias all dwell in the same spectrum of envisioning possibilities. It is the fine line between the possibility of the scenario and the necessity of utopia that describes precisely where our fictions can succeed or fail. As an image of potential futures, these speculations can aid in reflecting on the consequiences of choices.

As a necessary future to be attained, however, the threatening nature of the scenario becomes apparent: trying to enforce a Utopian world on a flawed reality amounts to little more than violent domination.
